A die casting DFM checklist helps buyers close risks before money is committed to a mold. DFM for die casting must connect part function, mold design, machining, finish, inspection and production—not just list design rules.

With a complete RFQ, Yongzhu Casting normally provides an initial quotation and DFM feedback within 1–2 working days. Complex issues may take longer. Tooling should begin only after the drawing revision, assumptions and acceptance requirements are clear.

What Must Be Confirmed Before Die Casting Tooling Starts?

A part can look suitable for aluminum die casting but still contain T1 risks. A heavy boss may shrink, a tight bore may need machining, and an undercut may require a slider. Tool marks may also conflict with a cosmetic face.

A die casting design review turns these risks into decisions. Both sides should agree on:

  • the part function, alloy and expected volume;
  • the controlled 2D and 3D file revisions;
  • features that can be cast and those that need CNC machining;
  • mold direction, side actions and visible tool marks;
  • critical dimensions, datums and inspection methods;
  • finish, assembly, sealing and test requirements.

This protects the aluminum die casting lead time. Open issues after steel cutting may affect completed work, mold cost and the T1 date.

Die Casting DFM Checklist Before Tooling

Use this die casting tooling checklist for a die casting drawing review. Detailed rules are covered in our aluminum die casting design guide.

Review areaQuestions to askDecision before tooling
Part use and alloyWhat must the part carry, seal or protect? Is the alloy fixed?Process and material direction
Wall sectionsAre walls even? Are there heavy bosses or sharp changes?Geometry suitable for stable filling and cooling
Draft and ejectionCan the part release without sticking or distortion?Draft and ejection direction
UndercutsDo any features need sliders, side cores or inserts?Tool structure and added cost
Parting and tool marksWhere can flash, gates, overflows and ejector marks appear?Acceptable visible and hidden areas
Tolerances and datumsWhich dimensions control fit or function?Cast limits versus machined limits
Machining allowanceWhich holes, threads, faces or sealing areas need cutting?Machining scope and fixture plan
Finish and appearanceWhich faces are cosmetic? Is coating or blasting required?Surface acceptance standard
Assembly and testingAre inserts, mating faces, leak tests or special checks needed?Validation and inspection scope
File revisionDo the 2D and 3D files describe the same part?Approved revision for tooling

Not every item requires a design change. The result may be a clearer tolerance, a moved tool mark or an added machining step. The goal is to retain function while avoiding preventable risk.

What Should Buyers Receive After a DFM Review?

“Drawing OK” is not enough. DFM decisions should be traceable through an annotated drawing, marked PDF, issue list, meeting record or confirmed email.

A useful review record should show:

  • comments that have been accepted, rejected or left open;
  • the reason for each proposed change;
  • the effect of an unresolved point on quality, cost or lead time;
  • the planned parting direction, sliders and ejection approach;
  • cast features versus CNC-machined features;
  • cosmetic areas and acceptable gate, parting or ejector locations;
  • the final 2D and 3D revision used for tooling.

If DFM changes tooling, machining or inspection, the quote and schedule may change. Confirm the effect before moving forward.

How to Approve DFM and Release Tooling

DFM ends with a controlled release. Confirm matching 2D and 3D revisions, material, key dimensions, machining, cosmetic faces, tests and accepted deviations. Close or accept open issues in writing.

Next, review the die casting tooling plan. Yongzhu submits a 2D tool layout for approval before steel cutting. The record should define when tooling starts.

After release, each drawing change needs an impact review covering completed steel work, affected tool areas, machining, inspection, cost and timing. Work should continue only after the revised scope is accepted. This prevents the mold shop from building to an obsolete file.

Send Your Drawing for a Pre-Tooling DFM Review

Yongzhu Casting supports custom parts from drawing review and mold making through T1, casting, machining, finishing and inspection. Send your drawings, alloy, quantity, tolerances, machining, finish and test requirements.

We will identify missing decisions and confirm the next quotation or tooling step, preparing the part for stable production.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does DFM guarantee that no mold corrections will be needed after T1?

No. T1 may still reveal filling, cooling, ejection, dimensional or cosmetic issues that need process or tool correction.

Is mold flow analysis required for every die casting part?

No. It is most useful for thin walls, difficult flow paths, hot spots, sealing needs or strict quality requirements. Confirm its scope by project.

Can Yongzhu sign an NDA before reviewing my drawing?

Yes. Discuss the NDA before sending controlled drawings, models or other sensitive files.

Can a CNC prototype replace a die casting DFM review?

No. It can verify fit or assembly, but not metal flow, shrinkage, porosity, parting lines, ejection or production-tool behavior.

Is DFM only necessary for high-volume die casting projects?

No. Any custom tool benefits from review. At lower volumes, avoiding one mold change can be especially important to the budget.
