How long does aluminum die casting take? A new-tool custom aluminum die casting project has no honest one-number answer. Aluminum die casting lead time includes DFM, mold manufacturing, T1 approval, production, secondary operations and inspection. A repeat order follows a shorter route.

At Yongzhu Casting, initial quotation and DFM feedback normally take 1–2 working days when the RFQ is complete. For many standard projects, mold manufacturing takes about 25–35 days after design approval. T1 results, quantity, machining, finishing and inspection determine the rest. The useful answer is a milestone plan based on your part.

RFQ and DFM Review

The clock should not start while essential information is missing. A useful RFQ includes a 3D model, toleranced 2D drawing, alloy, quantity, annual forecast, finish and inspection requirements.

During die casting DFM review, we check wall thickness, draft, parting direction, undercuts, ejection, machining allowance and critical tolerances. A drawing change may alter the quotation and die casting tooling lead time. Freeze the approved revision before steel cutting.

Tool Design, Mold Manufacturing and T1 Samples

After approval, mold manufacturing begins. Part size, cavity number, sliders, side cores, inserts and tool-steel requirements all affect die casting mold lead time.

T1 samples are checked for filling, flash, ejection, shrinkage and dimensions. Yongzhu normally submits samples with basic dimensional inspection information. A failed result may require adjustment, mold correction or another trial. T1 approval must be a visible milestone.

Mass Production and Secondary Operations

Mass production starts after sample approval and commercial confirmation. Production lead time depends on quantity, cavity count, cycle time, alloy availability and machine capacity. Parts may then require trimming, CNC machining, drilling, tapping, shot blasting, powder coating or painting.

A machining fixture, coating approval, leak test or dimensional report may create a separate critical path. The schedule must follow the finished part—not only casting.

A repeat order still requires confirmation of mold condition, material, machine and finishing capacity. An inactive mold may need maintenance first.

Fixtures and inspection plans may be prepared while the mold is built, but only after the design is stable.

What a Reliable Die Casting Project Schedule Should Show

A credible schedule is tied to decisions and deliverables. Ask the supplier to identify:

  • what starts the lead-time clock;
  • the approved drawing revision and remaining technical questions;
  • tool-layout approval and steel-cutting release;
  • planned mold completion and T1 dates;
  • the T1 sample package and buyer approval period;
  • allowance for correction and resampling;
  • production, machining, finishing and inspection periods;
  • the factory release date and whether transport is included.

Otherwise, one quote may promise T1 samples while another promises finished parts ready to ship.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can CNC prototypes be produced before T1 samples?

Yes, when early fit or assembly verification is needed. However, a machined prototype cannot validate die-casting behavior such as filling, shrinkage, porosity, parting lines or ejector marks.

Can an existing die casting mold be transferred to Yongzhu?

Possibly, after evaluation. We must inspect its size, condition, runner and ejection design, records and machine compatibility before confirming repair, adaptation and timing.

Can part of an order ship before the full batch is complete?

A partial shipment can be discussed for a critical launch. Batch quantity, inspection release, packing and additional logistics cost should be agreed before production.

Are T1 samples always supplied with the final surface finish?

No. Initial T1 samples may be reviewed as-cast or shot-blasted so the tool and dimensions can be checked first. Request finished samples when coating or appearance approval is part of validation.
