Die Casting Mold Ownership, Storage and Maintenance

A die casting mold may remain at a supplier for years, even when the customer paid the tooling fee. Ownership, custody, permitted use, maintenance, and release are separate questions. Settle them before tooling starts, not when production stops or a supplier change becomes urgent. This buyer’s checklist is not jurisdiction-specific legal advice.

What Should a Die Casting Mold Ownership Agreement Define?

Payment alone does not explain what was purchased or when title transfers. Record the decision in the quotation, purchase order, or tooling agreement, identifying the tool, owner, holder, location, and related assets.

Owning the physical die does not automatically transfer product rights, native tool drawings, electrode files, CNC programs, process settings, or supplier techniques. Define the files included in the transaction.

Identify any third-party toolmaker holding the asset. A customer-owned tooling label, asset number, photographs, and location record improve traceability. Review the tooling schedule after major design changes, added cavities, or replacement inserts. New investment should not leave ownership of the modified asset unclear.

How Should a Customer-Owned Mold Be Stored and Maintained?

Custody should produce evidence, not only a statement that the mold is “in good condition.” Its record should show the asset ID, part revision, cavity count, location, last run, cumulative shot count, completed work, open issues, and status.

Before storage, remove residue, protect steel against corrosion, address moisture in cooling circuits, cap connections, protect critical faces, and position the tool securely. Keep slides, cores, ejector and hydraulic parts, and agreed spares identified and protected.

Maintenance frequency should follow tool design, alloy, volume, wear history, part quality, and condition. No universal interval fits every die casting mould. Triggers include shot count, flash growth, dimensional drift, difficult ejection, cooling-flow change, heat checking, and shutdowns.

Records should distinguish cleaning and lubrication from welding, insert replacement, gate repair, polishing, or dimensional correction. Work that could change an approved feature needs review and updated records. The history explains quality changes and helps plan aluminum die casting lead time.

What Happens When a Mold Is Restarted, Transferred, or Retired?

Restart: Confirm the drawing revision, corrosion condition, cooling integrity, moving components, repairs, and open issues. Long storage or significant repair may require a tool trial, focused inspection, or broader revalidation; not every restart needs the same evidence.

Transfer: Handover should include the identified mold, agreed spares, shot and maintenance history, known damage, open actions, tool drawings, and latest approved sample or inspection baseline. The receiving supplier must check size, weight, clamping, tie-bar clearance, injection interface, cooling, hydraulics, ejection, and automation. Ownership does not guarantee machine compatibility.

Retirement: Do not scrap customer-owned tooling because it is inactive or uneconomical to repair. Confirm the reason, owner authorization, treatment of components, record retention, and evidence of destruction or return.

For restarted or transferred tooling, use the T1 sample approval checklist to define release and select die casting inspection methods for affected features.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a buyer inspect a customer-owned mold while it remains at the supplier?

Agree access in advance. Evidence may include current photographs, the asset register, condition and maintenance records, a video review, or an arranged on-site inspection.

Can storage fees apply when no production orders are placed?

Yes, if the commercial terms allow them. Define any free period, later fee, notice, response deadline, and options for storage, return, transfer, or authorized disposal.

Does long-term storage reset a die casting mold’s shot count or service life?

No. Storage helps prevent further corrosion or damage, but does not erase thermal fatigue, wear, repairs, or previous shots. Assess remaining life from condition and history.

What if the toolmaker and the die casting supplier are different companies?

Identify who holds, maintains, and releases the mold. The third-party holder may need to acknowledge the asset ID, ownership terms, permitted use, and transfer procedure.
